JT'S JAMS OF 2008

Jt's Jams of 2008

Yeah yeah... I'm all digital internetty. Not completely though... I still visit the fetus, I still buy records, I still don't have a phone, but when it comes to general music time... robuts. Also, I can't find my button maker and work and wedding plans are keeping me from playing with paper all day to send you guys snail music. The good news is... my Jams of the year will actually come out decently soon... and instead of just 21 copies, everybody can share the joy. Hooray for the internet! For those of you that don't know my Jams of the Year are my Jams of the Year... release date is irrelavant, this is a list of the songs that will always remind me of 2008. So after adding over 4000 songs to my library this year, I cut the best jams down to 80... these are my favorite 16 of those. You can DOWNLOAD THE MIX HERE... it's in mix tape order... not favorite order.

Breakfast

Le Le from Flage

This is the novelty track of the year that everybody should know. After a couple of listens, I guarantee you will be singing "Your the cheese on my baguette, the jelly on my bread, the french on my toast, where the hoes at?"

Vamanos

Elkin & Nelson from Unknown

This classic nine minute latin track might be tough to swallow for some of you... only cuz it's nine minutes long though. Not for me... I think there was a night I was on a beer fun for a party and I listened to this song for 36 minutes straight.

Fake Empire

The National from Boxer

So I slipped on The National last year. I think I was in hype denial. Too much low voiced beauty last year for me to believe that these guys were as good as the critics said they were. It's true though... The National are legit. This entire album is good.

The Re-Arranger

Mates of State from Re-Arrange Us

Twee. Yes I still like happy music. I don't know if it gets happier. There's some depth to this twee though. A nice song about relationships and loving love.

Skinny Love

Bon Iver from For Emma Forever Ago

Of course every jam of the year list needs some singer song–writer action. This is the slow jam of the year. MN had some major love for Bon Iver this year... I think he played 5 shows here that I didn't see.

Fools

The Dodos from Visiters

Another great indie album of 2008... it was tough for me to land on one song from it. I think Fools captures everything I like about The Dodos.

Electric Feet

MGMT from Oracular Spectacular

LIsa and I caught MGMT at the entry this year. We were thoroughly annoyed by there arrogantly youthful stage presence, but once we moved away from the stage, the music was really good. This is the groove that caught my attention at that show.

Little Garcon

Born Ruffians from Red, Yellow & blue

I don't know much about this band, nor do I know how I found out about them, but I couldn't pull myself away from this song this year. Good road trip jam.

I Woke Up Today

Port O'Brien from Nowhere to Run

Another band I have no idea how I came upon. I like the raw folky yelly feel they've got going on this album.

Gobbledigook

Sigur Ros from Med SudI Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust

Did you catch that album title? Huh? I dunno... but Sigur Ros continues to make some great non-comprehensible music. They came out with a documentary this year that follows them through strange places in thier homeland of Iceland.

Lights Out

Santogold from Santogold

I knew Santogold from their week long stay on MTVs 10spot and their Budweiser commercials but didn't truly appreciate them until Ashley enlightened me to this fantastic debut album.

Hey Mr. DJ

Zhane from Pronounced Jah-Nay

Sweet sweet 90s R&B. Does it get much better than this? I don't know. I'm truly a 90s R&B junkie and this song epitomizes everything I like about it. In vain of "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" this jam calls out to the DJ to get the party started.

Bros. On the Slide

Cymande from Renegades of Funk

Super groovy. I think I first heard this song while watching some railslide highlights on cable. Quite a blessing as this is a classic funk album. Thank you Extreme Sports Channel.

Honey

Erykah Badu from New Amerykah

I recall a drunken summer night sitting in front of my computer gushing to Lola about how much I love this song. Erykah Badu kind of freaked out making a statement on this album and dropped this little diddy on the end. I feel like maybe I should thank the record label for this one.

Strange Overtones

David Byrne and Brian Eno from Everything That Happens Will Happen

Byrne and Eno together again. Rejoice. This song is too clever for me to deal with about auditory voyerism of songwriting. It makes me want to barf joy.

Naive Melody

Talking Heads from Speaking in Tongues

What? The top two jams of the year by the same artist? Isn't that mixtape no–no? Not technically... Byrne and Eno and Talking Heads are totally different. I don't know how I never heard this song that immediately makes the Life Soundtrack. I instantly get images of panning through chill party heaven in my head when I listen to this song. I abused this song this summer
